A boy with an old-fashioned lunch pail. Tobacco tins were commonly used for this purpose.I've sometimes wondered why we call containers that look more like buckets or boxes "lunch pails". This is a great example of how our use of language often lags behind our changing environment. Similarly, some people still refer to CDs as "records".
